'C' Are The Champions ............

I had the temerity to go away for a few day's break this week and was rewarded by it pissing down with rain from start to finish, although the sun did shine as I was driving home !!

My absence meant that I was unable to play in the 'C' team match against Kidsgrove - a match that would guarantee us at least a share of the Division 4 Championship if we won it. The unavailability of Rob Taylor, Emperor Ming, Richard Cantliff and myself meant that the entire usual 'C' team were unavailable. However, The Magician stepped into the breach to Captain the team to what had looked an unlikely 2.5 - 1.5 win. Unfortunately he didn't lead by example in his own game, or so he tells me, as he lost on time whilst being up by a King, Rook and 4 Pawns against a King and a Pawn. Excellent wins by Neal Davis and John White on Boards 2 and 4, together with an equally excellent draw by the Mad Mullah on Board 1 gave us the win we needed.

This was a fantastic win for the team and demonstrates the strength in depth that Fenton have at this level. Many thanks to Stuart for organising the team in my absence.

This meant that the only team that could now catch us were Newcastle 'D'. If we lost all of our remaining 3 matches and they won their remaining 2 matches they could equal our points total.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, but fortunately for us, Newcastle were beaten by Cheddleton 'E' on Friday night so whatever happens in our remaining matches we have now won the Championship outright with 3 matches to spare.

Our remaining matches are - Meir 'B' (Away) this coming Monday and Cheddleton 'E' (Away) on 7th May and Cheddleton 'E' (Home) on 17th May. It would be nice if, as well as winning the Championship, we could go through the season undefeated and that's what I will be trying to do.
